This morning with Linda Mottram on ABC 702 I’ll be discussing Cryptolocker ransomware and the security of the Internet of Machines.

radio talkback & discussion on technology, the web and social media

If you missed the program, you can listen to the segments through Soundcloud.

Tuesday morning with Linda Mottram on ABC 702 I’ll be discussing Cryptolocker ransomware, the security of the Internet of Machines and the tech industry’s call for less internet surveillance.

It’s only a short spot from 10.15am and I’m not sure we’ll have time for callers, but one of the big takeaways I’ll have for listeners is the importance of securing your systems against malware, there’s also some security ideas for business users as well.

We’ll probably get to mention the ACCC’s warnings on smartphone apps and the current TIFF bug in Windows as well.

If you’re in the Sydney area, we’ll be live on 702 from 10.15, otherwise you can stream it through the internet.

  1.      Is there any way of listening to this somehow? I’m not in Sydney and so didn’t hear this – and the link above, “stream it through the Internet”, doesn’t seem to work for some reason (I assume it’s meant to allow you to replay this segment of the program).

CryptoLocker seems to be one of the very worst things I’ve heard about for some years in the virus/Trojan/worm category. I have no evidence for it – but I have a kind of hunch that, in future, we will see any misuse of computers like this treated more and more as acts of terrorism rather than like ordinary crimes of theft, armed robbery or similar, and treated accordingly. This would seem very likely as we become (perhaps to our long-term detriment) more and more dependent on computers, more helpless to do anything important without them, so that viruses, ransomware, etc. become more and more damaging – and unpredictable in the effects they have.
Could we see a time when, like some other acts of terrorism of a more traditional kind, any creation or propagation of a virus, Trojan, etc. results in an automatic term of imprisonment for life with no possibility of parole? It won’t surprise me if we see this before too many more years pass.

    1. Hi Micheal, the spot was bumped at the last minute for the cricket so tune in again tomorrow at the same time. I’ll also fix that link.

I agree that virus attacks may become more damaging as our supply chains become more internet dependent and any interruption to connections could have serious effects to the economy. It’s another risk we have to manage.
